In an innovative approach to combat the escalating obesity rates in the country, China's health ministry has rolled out a series of comprehensive measures. Addressing the issue at a press conference during the National People's Congress, National Health Commission head Lei Haichao outlined a multifaceted strategy to help individuals better manage their weight.
One of the key initiatives includes the establishment of specialized weight management clinics within medical institutions. These clinics will offer professional consultations to assist people in their weight management journey, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle to prevent chronic diseases.
In a bid to encourage healthier habits among the populace, the commission has called on hotels and resorts to install scales, making it easier for individuals to track their weight and stay mindful of their health goals. Additionally, Chinese Olympic champions have been enlisted to promote weight management through various social media channels, spreading awareness and providing valuable insights on maintaining a balanced lifestyle.
The urgency of these measures is underscored by the alarming statistics revealed in a report by the health commission, which indicated that as of 2020, around one-third of Chinese adults were classified as overweight, with approximately 16% falling into the category of obesity. Given the strong association between excess weight and serious health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and certain cancers, these initiatives play a crucial role in safeguarding the well-being of the population and fostering a culture of healthy living across the nation.
