In the early hours of Thursday morning, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake struck near the southern Italian city of Naples, causing buildings to crumble and locals to flee into the streets in fear. The epicenter of the quake was located near the coastal town of Pozzuoli, just west of Naples, as reported by Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV).
This seismic event, equivalent in strength to a similar one in May of last year, marked the most powerful earthquake in the region since the early 1980s when a series of tremors wreaked havoc and panic in the same area. While small earthquakes are common in this densely populated area close to the Campi Flegrei super volcano, residents attested that this was one of the most severe they had experienced in recent memory.
Raffaele Cipollano, a local resident, vividly described the terrifying moment of the quake, "I was sleeping, and suddenly I heard a terrible bang, I had never heard one so loud. It was a very bad moment. Then of course when I got up I turned on the lights and saw that my house is full of cracks, there are cracks everywhere."
Emergency teams sprang into action to rescue an individual trapped in the debris of a partially collapsed building. The region also witnessed several minor aftershocks, heightening the anxiety among the already shaken populace. Some desperate individuals even forced open a gate at a former NATO base in Bagnoli in search of refuge from the tremors.
The earthquake resulted in power outages in parts of Naples, prompting many families to spend the night outdoors or in their vehicles, fearing further quakes. In Italy, a country prone to seismic activity, the region encompassing Naples has a history of devastating earthquakes. One of the most tragic incidents in recent times was a magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck the Irpinia area in November 1980, claiming the lives of over 2,700 people, injuring more than 8,800, and demolishing over 300 municipalities.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this recent quake, the resilience and unity of the people of Naples will be put to the test once again as they work together to rebuild and recover from the destruction wrought by nature's unpredictable force.
