Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin has announced that she and her husband, Markus Räikkönen, are getting a divorce after 19 years of marriage. In a statement on Instagram, Marin expressed gratitude for the years they spent together and for their daughter, and said that they have filed for divorce together.
Despite the separation, Marin emphasized that she and her husband remain on good terms and will continue to co-parent their child and spend time together as a family. The news comes after Marin's party, the center-left Social Democratic Party, lost Finland's parliamentary election in April, and she is currently serving as caretaker prime minister until a new coalition government can be formed.
Marin's rise to power was a rapid one. She entered politics at a young age and quickly moved up the ranks of the Social Democratic Party, becoming the world's youngest prime minister in 2019 at the age of 34. While she has been celebrated as a progressive leader and role model for millennials, she has also faced criticism at home for her partying and her government's high public expenditure.
Despite these challenges, Marin remains popular among many Finns, particularly young moderates, and has been praised for her efforts to advance gender equality and address climate change. As she navigates this personal transition, her supporters will undoubtedly be watching closely to see how she continues to lead and inspire in the years to come.
