Italy has recently implemented stricter regulations regarding citizenship eligibility based on ancestry, amid concerns of widespread abuse of the system. Under the previous rules, individuals who could prove descent from an Italian ancestor alive after March 17, 1861, could apply for citizenship. However, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani highlighted that the process had been exploited, leading to a surge in citizenship requests as individuals sought Italian passports for the benefits they provide.
Moving forward, only individuals with at least one parent or grandparent born in Italy or another European Union member state will automatically qualify for citizenship by descent. Tajani emphasized the significance of Italian citizenship, stating that it should not be treated as a means to attain visa-free travel privileges without a genuine connection to the country.
The foreign ministry revealed a significant increase in citizenship grants abroad, particularly in South America, where many Italians emigrated in the past. The demand for Italian citizenship has led to a growing industry of companies profiting from assisting individuals in tracing their family roots and obtaining necessary documentation.
In response to the overwhelming demand, citizenship applications will now be centralized in Rome to alleviate the burden on consulates. Italy's population has been decreasing, and the previous rules had an estimated 60 to 80 million people worldwide eligible for citizenship. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has suggested attracting individuals of Italian descent from countries like Venezuela to address the demographic decline.
Critics argue that ancestry-based citizenship is unfair, granting nationality to individuals with tenuous connections to Italy while placing obstacles for the children of migrants raised in Italy. They often have to wait until adulthood to apply for citizenship, despite having strong cultural ties to the country. Italy's efforts to tighten its citizenship laws aim to ensure that citizenship is granted with consideration of genuine ties to the nation.
