In a strategic bid to attract affluent migrants and stimulate economic growth, New Zealand has recently relaunched its golden visa program, the Active Investor Plus visa, with significant modifications. The new changes aim to make the program more appealing to high-net-worth individuals by eliminating the English language requirement, reducing the mandatory time spent in the country, lowering minimum investment thresholds, and streamlining investment categories.

Immigration Minister Erica Stanford highlighted a surge in interest from the US and Europe, where escalating geopolitical tensions have spurred wealthy individuals to explore opportunities abroad. Amid the program revamp, New Zealand stands out as an attractive haven due to its serene location in the South Pacific and stable political environment.

The Active Investor Plus visa, which previously attracted around NZ$1 billion yearly, experienced a downturn after stringent rules were implemented in 2022. However, the updated version has reignited interest, with applicants now having two investment paths to choose from.

Under the Growth category, a NZ$5 million investment in higher-risk assets is required, along with a reduced residency commitment of 21 days over three years. The Balanced category mandates a NZ$10 million investment diversified across bonds, equities, or property for five years, with a 105-day stay that can be lessened by increasing the investment.

Despite the program's benefits, potential applicants remain wary of New Zealand's restrictions on foreign property ownership, limiting purchases to citizens, tax residents, and nationals from Australia and Singapore. Talks are underway within the coalition government to address this concern, recognizing the importance of property ownership for prospective investors.

Looking ahead, the evolving golden visa program represents an opportunity for New Zealand to bolster its economy through foreign investment while providing affluent migrants with a secure and appealing relocation option amidst global uncertainties.
