In the face of escalating trade tensions between the United States and Vietnam, sportswear giants like Nike and Adidas are bracing for potential disruptions to their supply chains. As U.S. President Donald Trump gears up to announce a new round of tariffs, Vietnam, a major production hub for these brands, is at risk of being targeted due to its significant trade surplus with the U.S.

Nike, which relies heavily on Vietnam for footwear and apparel production, could face challenges as higher tariffs would either increase costs for the company or lead to price hikes for consumers. With 50% of its footwear and 28% of its apparel coming from Vietnam, Nike is particularly vulnerable to the impact of the proposed tariffs. Adidas, while slightly less exposed, also relies on Vietnam for a significant portion of its production.

Furthermore, smaller and newer sportswear brands, such as On, are even more heavily dependent on Vietnam for manufacturing. The potential tariffs could lead to price adjustments for premium brands like On, impacting consumer affordability and market competitiveness.

The broader sportswear industry is on edge as higher production costs in Vietnam could disrupt supply chains and lead to increased prices for consumers. While some companies may consider shifting production to other Southeast Asian countries like Cambodia and Indonesia, rising production costs and potential tariff threats in these regions pose additional challenges.

Despite the uncertainty, there is some optimism that tariffs on imports from Vietnam may not be as severe as those imposed on Chinese imports. Vietnamese leaders have taken steps to maintain positive relations with the U.S., offering concessions and promising increased imports in an effort to avoid harsh tariffs.

In the midst of this uncertainty, the sportswear industry, particularly heavyweights like Nike and Adidas, must carefully navigate the evolving trade landscape to mitigate potential impacts on their businesses and maintain consumer trust.
