In a recent development, President Donald Trump has decided to extend the deadline for Chinese technology company ByteDance to sell the U.S. assets of the popular app TikTok to a non-Chinese buyer. The original deadline set in January was supposed to expire, but now Trump has granted an additional 75 days for the deal to be finalized.

Trump expressed the need for more time to ensure all necessary approvals are in place for the transaction. He also mentioned the ongoing discussions with China, acknowledging their discontent over reciprocal tariffs between the two countries. Trump has indicated a willingness to reduce tariffs on China to facilitate a deal with ByteDance for the sale of TikTok, which is widely used by 170 million Americans.

ByteDance confirmed that discussions with the U.S. government are ongoing, but no agreement has been reached yet. Approval from the Chinese government remains a significant hurdle in finalizing the deal, as China has not publicly committed to allowing the sale of TikTok's U.S. business.

The White House-led negotiations are leaning towards a solution where the largest non-Chinese investors in ByteDance would increase their stakes and acquire TikTok's U.S. operations, thereby diluting Chinese ownership below the required threshold by U.S. law. Walmart is also reportedly considering joining a group of investors in the deal.

Overall, the future of TikTok in the U.S. remains uncertain as the deadline extension provides more time for negotiations and resolution of key matters involving both American and Chinese interests.
