In a surprising turn of events, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday a temporary reduction in new tariffs on multiple countries, while simultaneously increasing tariffs on imports from China. This sudden reversal, coming less than 24 hours after the implementation of steep tariffs on numerous trading partners, caused a significant boost in U.S. stock markets.

Trump revealed plans to raise the tariff on Chinese imports to 125%, escalating tensions between the world's two largest economies. At the same time, he declared a 90-day suspension of targeted tariffs on other countries to allow for negotiations aimed at reducing them.

The White House confirmed that a 10% blanket duty on nearly all U.S. imports would remain in effect, with no changes to current duties on autos, steel, and aluminum. Following the announcement, U.S. stock indexes surged, with the S&P 500 climbing over 6%. Bond yields dipped from earlier highs, and the dollar strengthened against safe-haven currencies.

Goldman Sachs revised its recession probability to 45% post-Trump's move, down from 65%, anticipating a 15% increase in the overall tariff rate. Trump's frequent fluctuations on tariffs have raised concerns regarding his inconsistency in economic policy, with market participants finding it challenging to predict market conditions.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the administration's need for negotiation time with over 75 countries reaching out. He suggested that Trump strategically leveraged tariffs for negotiation purposes, shaping optimal leverage for the U.S. in talks with its trade partners.

As discussions progress with various nations, Trump's announcement took U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer by surprise, who was testifying on Capitol Hill. Democratic Representative Steven Horsford criticized the abrupt tariff pause, suggesting a lack of strategic planning.

Trump's latest tariff maneuvers have reignited uncertainty in global trade dynamics, showcasing the intricate balancing act he plays on the economic front. With negotiations ongoing, stakeholders look towards potential resolutions on the tariff front amidst the ever-evolving landscape of international trade.
