In response to the 10% tariffs imposed on goods from the European Union by the US government, Louis Vuitton has raised the price of one of its iconic handbags, the Neverfull GM in monogram-coated canvas. The bag now costs $2,200 on the Louis Vuitton US website, marking a $100 increase from the previous week, a jump of 4.8%.
According to Luca Solca, an analyst at Bernstein, Louis Vuitton has increased prices on US handbags by an average of 3.6%. This adjustment in pricing could indicate a shift in the brand's manufacturing strategies, with products not seeing an increase potentially being produced within the US itself. Louis Vuitton operates three workshops in the country.
Luxury conglomerates, including LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE, have issued warnings of potential price hikes in response to the US tariffs. Chief Financial Officer Cecile Cabanis emphasized that pricing strategies will vary across brands and product categories, reflecting the individual strengths and positioning of each label within the market.
Louis Vuitton, as LVMH's largest and most profitable brand, plays a significant role in the conglomerate's financial performance. Estimates suggest that Louis Vuitton accounted for approximately a quarter of LVMH's total revenue and over half of its profit last year. The brand's renowned monogrammed trunks and luxury accessories continue to attract a global clientele, contributing to its unrivaled position as the world's largest luxury fashion label.
In a similar move, Hermès International SCA has also announced plans to raise prices in the US to offset the impact of tariffs. Both Louis Vuitton and Hermès are navigating economic challenges, balancing pricing strategies to maintain their luxury positioning while adapting to shifting trade dynamics on the global stage.
