Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of Twitter, has announced that he will be stepping down from his role as CEO of the social media platform. Musk stated that he will be transitioning to the position of executive chair and chief technology officer, while a new female CEO, whose identity has not been revealed, will take over in approximately six weeks.
Musk's decision to step down from the position comes just a year after he acquired Twitter for a staggering $44 billion. At the time of the acquisition, Musk had indicated that he would only be taking charge of the platform for a limited time to oversee the organizational overhaul he believed the company needed to thrive.
During his tenure as CEO of Twitter, Musk implemented radical changes and spent long hours at the company's San Francisco headquarters, even sleeping there at times. However, he has now cited an overwhelming workload as the reason for his decision to step down.
In addition to his role at Twitter, Musk also serves as CEO of Tesla Inc. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. He has faced criticism in the past for sudden policy changes and allegedly neglecting his other businesses.
As part of his transition, Musk has also changed the name of Twitter's parent company to X Holdings. It remains to be seen what changes the new CEO will bring to the platform and how Musk's continued involvement as executive chair and chief technology officer will impact its future.
