In a move to bolster their strategic alliance, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama are preparing to hold a crucial high-level intergovernmental summit in Italy before the end of the year. The summit aims to elevate collaboration between the two nations across various sectors, notably energy, defense, and the combatting of illegal migration.
One of the key focal points of the upcoming summit is to expand on the energy agreement recently inked between the United Arab Emirates, Italy, and Albania. This agreement involves the establishment of a sub-sea energy link between the two countries, showcasing a commitment to strengthen their energy ties.
Furthermore, the joint communique expected after their meeting in Tirana will outline plans to enhance defense cooperation, particularly in shipbuilding. Italy is keen on supporting Albania's journey towards EU accession, with the efforts aimed at solidifying Albania's position within the bloc.
Of significant importance is the plan to intensify cooperation in development between Italy and Albania. This includes a proposal to recognize Italian state lender Cassa Depositi e Prestiti as a formal financial development institution in Albania, as part of a broader initiative to establish a new Albanian development bank.
The forthcoming summit will also see the establishment of a joint working group dedicated to addressing the issue of illegal migrations and enhancing patrolling in Albanian seas. Both leaders have a long-standing relationship, with Albania previously agreeing to host migrant centers to assist Italy in managing migrant arrivals by sea.
With Albania's recent election re-electing Prime Minister Rama for a historic fourth term and Prime Minister Meloni's tenure in Italy solidifying, the strengthening of ties between the two nations comes at a crucial juncture. Italy remains Albania's largest commercial partner, with trade flows amounting to 3.3 billion euros in 2024, underscoring the economic significance of their partnership.
