In a strategic move to enhance its genomics-driven drug discovery capabilities, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals has announced its acquisition of genomics firm 23andMe Holding for $256 million through a bankruptcy auction. The acquisition will allow Regeneron to integrate 23andMe's extensive database of over 15 million customer DNA profiles, gathered through direct-to-consumer saliva-testing kits, into its research efforts.

The decision to purchase 23andMe comes after the California-based company filed for bankruptcy last month due to a decline in consumer demand and a significant data breach in 2023. The acquisition bid by Regeneron outbid a nonprofit research institute founded by 23andMe's former CEO, solidifying Regeneron's commitment to advancing genomics research.

The deal has sparked discussions on data privacy issues, especially in light of the recent data breach at 23andMe. Acknowledging these concerns, Regeneron has pledged to prioritize the ethical use of customer DNA data, upholding 23andMe's existing privacy policies and complying with data protection laws.

To ensure transparency and accountability, Regeneron has committed to working with a court-appointed independent overseer to assess the implications of the acquisition for consumer privacy. The overseer will deliver a report to the bankruptcy court for review and approval on June 17.

Despite potential challenges and a long investment horizon, analysts view the acquisition as a strategic move for Regeneron, projecting positive outcomes in the long term. Regeneron will acquire all units of 23andMe except for its on-demand telehealth service Lemonaid Health, which will be discontinued.

Following the completion of the transaction, 23andMe will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Regeneron, marking a significant milestone in the genomics and healthcare industry.
