In the face of escalating trade tensions with the United States, South Korea has announced a series of new support measures aimed at safeguarding its key export industries such as biopharmaceuticals and automobiles. The move comes in response to President Donald Trump's imposition of tariffs on various products, including a 25% duty on goods from South Korea, which has put strain on the country's trade-dependent economy.

Acting Finance Minister Kim Beom-seok highlighted the government's proactive stance, stating that preparations are underway to address item-specific tariffs impacting sectors like pharmaceuticals and semiconductors. The focus on enhancing support for 'U-turn' investments underscores South Korea's commitment to mitigating the impact of the tariffs.

In particular, South Korea is bracing for potential tariffs targeting its biopharmaceutical industry, a strategic sector that comprises a significant portion of the country's exports. With 16% of pharmaceutical exports destined for the U.S., the government is closely monitoring developments in response to Trump's executive order aimed at streamlining approvals for pharmaceutical plants domestically.

The uncertainty surrounding U.S. policies has prompted deliberation among South Korean pharmaceutical companies regarding their operations in the American market. Celltrion, a prominent drugmaker, has opted to delay decisions on U.S. contract-manufacturing operations, citing concerns over operational costs. Nevertheless, the company remains confident in its competitive pricing strategy and is closely monitoring the evolving regulatory landscape.

Amidst these developments, regulatory officials from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are conducting inspections of Samsung Biologics' production facilities in South Korea, signifying ongoing oversight of the industry. The positive market response to this news was reflected in the rise of Samsung Biologics' shares and the overall performance of the KOSPI index.

In addition to sector-specific support, the South Korean government is preparing to bolster assistance for other industries, particularly automakers. With a comprehensive package worth $20.6 billion already in place to address liquidity concerns and facilitate export market expansion, the focus remains on navigating the looming tariff deadline of July 8.

As negotiations between South Korea and the U.S. continue, uncertainties linger regarding the possibility of securing exemptions and reaching a trade agreement by the July deadline. Minister of Trade Cheong In-kyo underscored the potential impact of Trump's tariffs on exports to the U.S. and China, emphasizing the need for swift resolution amidst domestic political dynamics.

Despite the challenges posed by the tariff measures, South Korea remains resilient in its efforts to navigate the evolving global trade landscape and safeguard the interests of its key export industries.
