Several players from the French soccer team Toulouse were excluded from the Ligue 1 game against Nantes on Sunday as they refused to participate in a league-wide anti-homophobia campaign. Toulouse FC said in a statement that some players expressed their disagreement with the association of their image with the rainbow colors representing the LGBT movement. The club respected the individual choices of its players, but after numerous exchanges, it decided to exclude these players from the game.

French teams in the country's top two divisions were asked to don rainbow-colored numbers and hold banners to raise awareness of the upcoming International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia on Wednesday. The players who were excluded were not named, but Moroccan international Zakaria Aboukhlal confirmed on social media that he "made the decision not to take part in today's [Sunday's] game." He emphasized that he holds respect for every individual, regardless of personal preferences, gender, religion, or background. However, he added that he did not feel he was the most suitable person to participate in the campaign, as it did not align with his personal beliefs.

Egyptian international Mostafa Mohamed also posted on social media explaining his reasons for not participating in the campaign and playing for Nantes against Toulouse. He stated that he respected all differences, beliefs, and convictions, including his own personal beliefs. Given his roots, culture, and the importance of his convictions and beliefs, he did not feel it was possible for him to participate in the campaign.

Toulouse drew 0-0 with Nantes on Sunday and is currently in 13th place in the league. The exclusion of players who refused to participate in the anti-homophobia campaign highlights the ongoing debate around the role of athletes in promoting social causes and the balance between individual beliefs and the collective responsibility of a team.
