Uber Technologies Inc. is planning to sublease nearly 269,000 square feet of space in its headquarters located in the Mission Bay neighborhood of San Francisco. This move is part of a growing trend of technology companies downsizing in the city, with office vacancies at a record high of 29.4% in the first quarter of this year. Uber's decision to sublease a third of its headquarters is expected to add to this office glut.
The company has stated that it does not currently occupy the space it plans to sublease, which is part of a cluster of four buildings that make up its headquarters. Uber has emphasized that this move will not impact the space available for employees or its footprint in the city. The company remains committed to its hybrid work approach, which emphasizes in-person collaboration, and continues to welcome employees to its Mission Bay campus.
Other tech companies such as Salesforce and Lyft have also looked to unload space in San Francisco. The downturn in the tech industry, which fuels the local economy, has contributed to the high office vacancy rate. This trend is expected to continue as remote work becomes more commonplace.
The owner of Uber's headquarters, Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc., declined to comment on the subleasing plans. While this move may be concerning for the commercial real estate market in San Francisco, it is a strategic decision for Uber as it adapts to the changing work environment and seeks to optimize its use of office space.
