Apple has announced a new multibillion-dollar agreement with US-based manufacturer Broadcom to develop 5G radio frequency and wireless connectivity components in the United States. The components will be designed and built in several American manufacturing and technology hubs, with Fort Collins, Colorado being one of the main locations as this is where Broadcom's facility is based.
This move is part of Apple's larger commitment to invest $430 billion in the economy through 2026 and to deepen its investments in technology that is built in America. In 2018, Apple pledged to build new facilities and create jobs as part of a $350 billion investment, which was later increased to $430 billion. The company has significantly outpaced this pledge, and now aims to support economic growth in the United States through job creation, direct spending with American suppliers, and capital expenditures.
The latest agreement with Broadcom comes as Apple continues to bet on 5G technology, which was introduced to the iPhone in 2020 and has since been rolled out to other devices, including the Apple Watch Series 7 and iPad Pro. With this new investment, Apple is further establishing itself as a key player in the 5G market and supporting the growth of American-made components in the technology industry.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a press release, "All of Apple's products depend on technology engineered and built here in the United States, and we'll continue to deepen our investments in the US economy because we have an unshakable belief in America's future." This commitment to American-made technology and job creation is a positive sign for the future of the US tech industry and the broader economy.
