In one of the most exciting season finales in recent memory, Bayern Munich secured its 11th straight Bundesliga championship after Borussia Dortmund spurned a golden opportunity to clinch the title in its final game of the season, drawing 2-2 at home to Mainz.
Dortmund had gone into the final day of the season with a two-point advantage over Bayern at the top of the table and home advantage in its final match, with a title parade already planned. Bayern needed a win and a Dortmund loss or draw to clinch the title, but Dortmund could still lose and secure the championship if Bayern failed to win.
As each minute passed, Dortmund was inching closer to its first title since 2012, but a heart-breaking eight minutes from time, Jamal Musiala rifled the ball into the net to restore Bayern's lead and crush Dortmund's hopes.
Despite the late drama, it was a deficit that Dortmund ultimately couldn't overturn, and the final whistle left its players slumping to the ground in mourning as Bayern Munich celebrated with its fans in Cologne.
For Bayern Munich, this was a disappointing season by its high standards, and the club immediately announced the dismissal of CEO Oliver Kahn and board member Hasan Salihamidžić after winning the title.
The club announced that Jan-Christian Dreesen would take over as CEO, and the successor to Salihamidžić has yet to be decided.
As the curtain falls on another dramatic Bundesliga season, fans will be left to wonder whether anyone can dethrone Bayern Munich next season or whether its reign of dominance will continue.
