Paris Saint-Germain secured their 11th Ligue 1 title on Saturday, but the real headline-grabber was Lionel Messi who scored his 496th goal in Europe's top five leagues, surpassing the previous record of 495 held by Cristiano Ronaldo. The Argentine striker made it onto the scoresheet with a well-placed shot from a Kylian Mbappé cross in the 59th minute of the game against Strasbourg. Although Kevin Gameiro of Strasbourg later equalized, PSG still went on to take the title, breaking Saint-Etienne's previous record for the most Ligue 1 trophies won.
However, the record-breaking goal came amid an increasingly complicated relationship between PSG and Messi, who was suspended by the club earlier this month for taking an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia, causing him to miss a training session. Though he later apologized to the team, some PSG supporters still booed him upon his return. In addition to this, there were rumors earlier this month that Messi had agreed to join a Saudi Arabian club once his PSG contract expires on June 30th.
Meanwhile, PSG has continued to struggle in the Champions League, with another early exit this season. Manager Christophe Galtier recognized the difficulty in winning a league title and acknowledged the reigning champions in every European league have had their share of problems this season. He emphasized that winning the title was an achievement and not something to take for granted, especially for PSG.
All in all, PSG has made history by becoming the first team in the league to be at the top of the table from the first round of matches until the last, setting a new standard in the league. Nonetheless, the complicated relationship between PSG and Messi, coupled with the team's continued struggles in the Champions League, suggests that all is not entirely rosy in Paris.
