On Monday, Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple Inc., held a meeting with China's Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao to discuss the supply chain and the development of Apple in China. This meeting emphasizes the importance of the relationship between the two despite the ongoing tensions between the US and China. The statement from Wang's ministry indicates that both sides exchanged their views on stabilizing the industry supply chain and the development of Apple in China. Wang also assured Cook that China will continue to provide good services to foreign firms, including Apple.
Cook is among several US and European industry leaders who have met with Wang during the China Development Forum in Beijing. This marks the most significant official meetings between foreign executives and Chinese officials since China lifted its Covid Zero restrictions in December. Wang has already met with the leaders of Nestle SA, BMW AG, Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Pfizer Inc., and Qualcomm Inc. Cook, who spoke at the CDF on Saturday, expressed that the relationship between China and Apple is "symbiotic." Additionally, during his visit to China, Cook, along with Deirdre O'Brien, the company's retail chief, and other executives, visited an Apple retail store in Beijing.
Apple's popularity in China has grown significantly over the past decade since Cook spearheaded the company's retail expansion in the region. Currently, Greater China accounts for about 20% of Apple's sales. However, the relationship between Apple and China has recently faced challenges. Last year, due to Covid-related factory closures, Apple experienced unprecedented production delays, which caused a limited supply of its flagship iPhone 14 Pro. In response, Apple is seeking to diversify its manufacturing operations, including shifting more iPhone production to India.
