Nigeria’s dollar bonds experienced a surge in value after President Bola Tinubu announced the cancellation of the country’s $10 billion fuel subsidy program and intentions to implement a unified exchange rate. The announcement came during his inauguration speech on Monday and led to a 3.3% increase in the value of debt maturing in 2047, with bonds due in 2049 and 2051 gaining 2.9% and 3.5%, respectively.

Tinubu explained that the savings from the elimination of the fuel subsidy would be redirected towards much-needed projects in education and healthcare. The new president also urged the central bank to lower interest rates in order to foster economic growth and achieve a targeted 6% annual growth rate.

The removal of the petrol subsidy was seen as a necessary measure to create fiscal space for Nigeria’s economy, according to analysts at FBNQuest in Lagos. Additionally, the harmonization of the country’s multiple exchange rates is predicted to close the existing arbitrage gap between official and parallel market exchange rates.

Overall, Tinubu’s speech was well-received by investors and is expected to have a positive impact on Nigeria’s economic standing.
