Amidst massive protests and nationwide strikes, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has postponed a controversial proposal to weaken the judiciary. The plan had triggered protests from tens of thousands of people, prompting the US to express deep concern. In a televised address from his office, Netanyahu announced that he would seek dialogue with the opposition to find a compromise, stating that he would not allow Israel to be torn apart.
The proposed bill aims to give politicians dominance in selecting judges, but Netanyahu has delayed parliamentary votes on the issue. The economy was brought to a standstill as multiple sectors went on strike, but a major union group called off the strike after Netanyahu's announcement. Netanyahu also stated that there would be a rebalancing of power between the high court and the legislature, with or without the proposed bill. Following Netanyahu's speech, opposition leaders Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid expressed their willingness to engage in talks.
