Tensions between China and the United States continue to escalate following a near-miss between the two countries' warships in the Taiwan Strait. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore, China's defense minister, Li Shangfu, accused the US and its allies of attempting to destabilize the Indo-Pacific by creating chaos and provoking conflict. He went on to warn that any major confrontation between the US and China would be a "disaster" for the world.

This came just hours after the US had accused a Chinese warship of cutting in front of an American vessel during a joint exercise with the Canadian Navy in the Taiwan Strait. According to the US Indo-Pacific Command, the Chinese ship came within 150 yards of the American vessel, forcing it to slow down to avoid a collision. The Chinese navy's Eastern Theater Command, however, denied the US claims, stating that Chinese forces had handled the situation "based on laws and regulations".

Despite the tensions, both Li Shangfu and US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who also spoke at the Singapore summit, called for restraint and dialogue. Austin referred to a potential war over Taiwan as "devastating", while Li warned that any severe confrontation between China and the US would lead to an "unbearable disaster for the world."

The recent events come amid growing hostilities between China and the US. China has rejected an offer from the US to meet at the summit in Singapore this year, and the two countries are yet to schedule any talks. The animosity has been further fuelled by China's claims over Taiwan, which is considered by Beijing as part of its territory. The US continues to oppose China's aggressive military maneuvers and exercises near Taiwan, while warning of "coercion and bullying".

As the world looks on, both sides must tread carefully and show restraint in order to prevent any actions that could lead to conflict. The situation between China and the US remains tense, and any further escalation could have potentially devastating consequences.
