Alex Soros, the 37-year-old son of billionaire philanthropist George Soros, has taken over as the new chair of Open Society Foundations, a nonprofit organization established by his father in 1979. The foundation, which aims to promote democratic values, has been a significant contributor to humanitarian and environmental causes worldwide.
Previously, the majority of assets managed by Soros' family office - which amounts to $25 billion - were under the control of George Soros. However, with his recent appointment, Alex Soros will now preside over the foundation and make financial decisions in the spirit of his father's beliefs.
Alex Soros expressed his concerns regarding Donald Trump's potential presidential run and suggested that he believed in the necessity to match his political opponents' financial support. As a result, he has met with several high-ranking political officials, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and members of the Biden administration.
According to a spokesperson, Alex Soros plans to focus on securing voting rights and personal freedom while supporting democracy abroad. Meanwhile, his father will maintain his commitment to liberal causes and the Democratic Party's political campaigns, as he has in the past.
George Soros is a prominent public figure known for his massive contributions to various progressive movements, climate change initiatives, and international humanitarian efforts. He founded Soros Fund Management and made a fortune with his bold investments, including an infamous bet against the British pound, before transitioning the fund into a family office in 2011. Since then, his foundation has spent $19.1 billion on philanthropic endeavors worldwide.
