The Chinese telecommunications giant, Huawei Technologies, is reportedly requesting licensing fees from around 30 Japanese companies for the use of patented technology, according to Nikkei. The requested payment levels reportedly include a fixed fee of 50 yen (35 cents) or less per unit to 0.1% or less of the price of the system, and these fees are seen as a way for Huawei to amass revenue in the face of the sanctions it has received.
The media outlet states that Huawei is currently in talks with several telecom-related firms in Japan and may also be increasing its royalty collection in Southeast Asia.
Specifically, Huawei is seeking fees from manufacturers that use components known as wireless communication modules, and it is reported that companies ranging from just a few employees to those employing over 100 have already received requests from Huawei.
While the company faces difficulties related to trade bans imposed by the US and its allies, it is evident that Huawei is still seeking out ways to continue generating revenue. It remains to be seen how successful Huawei will be in collecting the requested royalties, but it is clear that the company is willing to explore all possible avenues to drive revenue growth.
