Alibaba's co-founder, Jack Ma, made a rare appearance at an event in Hangzhou over the weekend. The business magnate, who has largely receded from the public eye, attended the final round of the Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition which was co-organized by the retailer's research arm. During the event, Ma spent time interacting with contestants and teachers, according to a post by the Damo Academy.
Ma's appearance marks a significant shift in his public presence, given he's dropped out of the public sphere after being critical of Chinese regulators in 2020. Since then, he has spent most of his time outside China, making infrequent appearances back in the mainland. This year, the Chinese billionaire accepted a position as an honorary professor at the University of Hong Kong and also joined the University of Tokyo's Tokyo College as a visiting professor.
Alibaba's President, Michael Evans, commented earlier this week on Ma's whereabouts. He confirmed that Ma is "alive" and "happy," adding that the billionaire is busy teaching and spending more time in China. Ma's return to China and public appearances indicate that he may be settling back into a more active role in business and entrepreneurship in China.
Despite his recent absence, Ma remains a significant figure in China's tech industry, and his renewed involvement could have a significant impact. As China's government increasingly cracks down on its largest companies, entrepreneurs such as Ma could be the key to sustaining growth and innovation in the country.
