South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has set a deadline of six months for his cabinet to deliver on crucial priorities as the ruling African National Congress (ANC) gears up for the upcoming elections. Recent opinion polls indicate that the ANC's longstanding majority is at risk due to public discontent over high unemployment rates, poverty, an energy crisis, and inadequate government services.

In no uncertain terms, Ramaphosa made it clear during a meeting of the ANC's National Executive Committee that there will be no room for excuses. He emphasized that the identified priorities must be effectively addressed and executed. The ANC will now embark on formulating a manifesto outlining its key objectives for the next term, with approximately 300 days remaining until the election. Reassured by internal projections, the party is confident it can secure around 11 million votes, which should secure its stay in power.

In defending his own legacy, Ramaphosa acknowledged the immense challenges he faced upon taking office in 2018. He noted that he had to navigate through a period of massive institutional corruption and mismanagement that severely crippled the functioning of state institutions. This, in turn, hampered the government's ability to fulfill its duties effectively. As a result, Ramaphosa stressed that there is no quick fix to such deep-seated issues and addressing them requires persistent effort and dedication.

The president's stern warning to his cabinet members reflects the urgency and mounting pressure faced by the ANC as it prepares for the crucial elections. The party’s ability to address critical concerns like unemployment, poverty, and energy shortages will have a significant impact on its chances of maintaining its long-held majority. With the clock ticking, the ANC must now focus on delivering tangible results and demonstrating its commitment to improving the lives of South Africans.
