George Santos, the embattled Republican congressman charged with federal fraud, has been granted additional freedoms by a judge to move around a larger area outside of the US capital. US Magistrate Judge Anne Shields has agreed to modify the current restrictions imposed upon Santos, who was previously required to remain in New York City, Long Island, and the District of Columbia. Under his $500,000 bond, Santos was allowed to travel within the continental US with prior notice to court officials. However, under the new ruling, Santos can now move around within a 30-mile radius of the capital without prior approval.

The decision to expand Santos' liberty comes after his lawyer, Joseph Murray, requested the modification, citing the need to travel outside of the District of Columbia for various regular activities, such as dining, shopping, attending meetings and events, and utilizing local airports. Murray argued that given the small geographical area of the District of Columbia, it was necessary for Santos to have the flexibility to engage in these usual and customary functions enjoyed by residents and professionals in the area.

Santos, a 34-year-old congressman, is facing serious charges of wire fraud and money laundering, with potential penalties of up to 20 years in prison if convicted. However, it is likely that Santos' actual sentence would be considerably shorter under federal sentencing guidelines. The case is being prosecuted by the Brooklyn US Attorney Breon Peace, whose office has declined to comment on the recent travel request.

Despite the ongoing legal battle, Santos now has the opportunity to venture beyond the previously restricted areas, enabling him to engage in a wider range of activities within the vicinity of the US capital.
