Warburg Pincus, a private equity firm, has emerged as one of the potential suitors for Vodafone Group Plc's Spanish business, according to sources familiar with the matter. The firm is considering making a bid for the Vodafone unit, which has recently been put under review. Other investors, including Carlyle Group, are also in the early stages of evaluating the operations.
Vodafone, the British telecommunications company, is currently working with an advisor as it explores its options for the Spanish business. The unit, which could be valued at around $4 billion, has already attracted initial interest from Apollo Global Management Inc., as reported earlier this year.
For over a year, Vodafone has been seeking to strike a deal in Spain. The previous CEO, Nick Read, had expressed the need for consolidation in the market. However, Vodafone ended up on the sidelines while two of its rivals agreed to merge. Margherita Della Valle, the current CEO, has since demoted the Spanish unit to Vodafone's cluster of smaller European businesses and placed it under strategic review.
During the company's recent quarterly results announcement, Della Valle stated that Spain remains a challenging market that requires structural action. She also mentioned considering a range of options on the inorganic front.
It is important to note that no formal sale process has started, and there is no certainty that these discussions will result in a transaction. Representatives from Carlyle, Vodafone, and Warburg Pincus have declined to comment on the matter.
The potential deal might gain momentum after a crucial ruling by antitrust regulators, expected on September 4. The provisional deadline for European authorities to decide on whether to approve a merger between Orange SA and Masmovil Ibercom SA, which could have an impact on Vodafone's Spanish operations, is set for that day.
Vodafone, based in Newbury, England, reported better-than-estimated sales growth in the first quarter. Its service revenue saw a growth of 3.7% compared to the previous year, surpassing analysts' expectations. Additionally, the company announced that Luka Mucic, a longtime executive at SAP SE, will take over as its Chief Financial Officer starting in September.
