This development comes as Robinhood has been under increased scrutiny from regulators in recent years. In early 2020, the company faced service outages that prevented its customers from trading, which drew significant backlash. Then, in early 2021, Robinhood faced further controversy during the meme-stock frenzy when it restricted trading on certain volatile stocks, leading to accusations of market manipulation.

The financial industry has also seen heightened regulatory attention towards cryptocurrencies following the collapse of FTX Trading Ltd, a once-prominent cryptocurrency exchange. In this context, Robinhood's subpoena from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the California Attorney General's Office in February 2021 regarding its cryptocurrency business is particularly relevant.

According to the regulatory filing submitted by Robinhood, the company has paid approximately $175 million in recent years to settle actions brought by the SEC, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), and several state regulators. The filing also acknowledges the high level of regulation in the securities industry and the inherent risks associated with its operations, including the potential for class-action lawsuits and regulatory actions.

In May of this year, Robinhood disclosed that it was under investigation by the SEC and FINRA for employees' use of "off-channel communications." This added to the mounting regulatory pressures facing the company.

It is worth noting that Robinhood declined to comment on the current investigation, and the New York Attorney General's office has not provided any additional information as well.

As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this latest scrutiny will impact Robinhood and its relationship with regulators going forward. The company has become a prominent player in the retail trading space, and these regulatory challenges may shape the future landscape of the industry as a whole.
