Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has come to her own defense amidst mounting criticism regarding her husband's business connections to a logistics company that has been making deliveries to Russia. Kallas, who has been a vocal critic of the Kremlin and has called for the economic isolation of Russia since its invasion of Ukraine, faced scrutiny after it was revealed that Stark Logistics AS, a trucking company in which her spouse, Arvo Hallik, holds a 24% stake, has been involved in transporting non-sanctioned goods between Estonia and Russia.
Stark Logistics, based in Keila, Estonia, has stated that it is assisting a client with an aerosol packaging plant in Russia to wind down its operations there. The company also mentioned that it will carry out a final shipment in September. Kallas acknowledged her husband's stake in the company but emphasized that he has no business clients from Russia. She maintained that the logistics company is only helping the Estonian customer in Russia comply with laws and sanctions.
Despite the Prime Minister's explanations, some political opponents have seized the opportunity to criticize her, with demands for her resignation being voiced. Kallas, however, reiterated her stance on Russia and stated that she still firmly believes that all trade and business with Russia should cease as long as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues.
Stark Logistics defended its actions, stating that all deliveries made on behalf of the client have been entirely legal and have not benefited Russia in any way. The company's general manager, Kristian Kraag, confirmed that the deliveries have been conducted in accordance with the law.
The situation has come as a blow to Kallas, whose center-right Reform Party has seen a decline in support in recent polls following her successful re-election earlier this year. Despite the criticism, Kallas remains steadfast in her belief that economic ties with Russia should be severed until the conflict in Ukraine is resolved.
