The Brazilian government has put forth a groundbreaking proposal to Argentina, offering a solution to the country's crippling cash shortages. The plan suggests using the Chinese yuan as a guarantee for export payments, allowing trade between the two nations to continue smoothly. Fernando Haddad, Brazil's Finance Minister, shared the proposal during his visit to South Africa for the BRICS summit.

Brazil has been actively seeking ways to support Argentina during its deepening economic crisis while also ensuring that Brazilian exporters receive payment for their sales to Argentina, which is their third-largest trading partner. Haddad believes that this plan will benefit Brazilian exporters and hopes that Argentina will agree to it.

Under the proposed plan, Banco do Brasil SA would initially guarantee trade worth $100 million to $140 million by converting yuan to reais, which would then be used to pay exporters. The aim is to test the effectiveness of this approach before considering its expansion. Haddad revealed that Brazil is now awaiting a response from Argentina's President, Alberto Fernandez.

Argentina has been grappling with soaring inflation and has been severely impacted by a record-breaking drought this year, pushing its economy to the brink of recession. The country has faced foreign reserve shortages, prompting it to use Chinese swap lines to make loan repayments to the International Monetary Fund. Additionally, companies in Argentina have been increasingly using the yuan to finance imports and operations due to difficulties in obtaining dollars.

The use of yuan in this proposed plan provides a unique and innovative solution to the payment difficulties faced by both countries. By utilizing the Chinese currency, Brazil aims to ensure that there is no risk of default on any payments, strengthening the trade relationship between the two South American nations. Now, it remains to be seen how Argentina will respond to this unprecedented proposal from Brazil.
