The French government is taking steps to combat the rise in smoking among young people by introducing a bill to ban disposable e-cigarettes. Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne revealed that the administration is currently working on a new national plan to tackle smoking, as she expressed concern over the increasing number of smokers in France, with approximately 75,000 deaths attributed to smoking-related illnesses annually.

Borne emphasized that while there would be no new tax increases on cigarettes in 2024, the government is aiming to curb the habit of smoking. One of the proposed measures in the plan is to ban disposable e-cigarettes, often referred to as "puffs," which are believed to contribute to the adoption of smoking among youths.

The move by France follows a global trend towards stricter regulations on vaping products. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently taken action to counter the surge in flavored, disposable e-cigarettes. The concern is that the appeal of such devices to young people may serve as a gateway to conventional smoking.

Prime Minister Borne highlighted the potential harm that these disposable e-cigarettes can cause, stating that they create an addictive reflex in young individuals. She emphasized that this pattern could lead to the dangerous habit of smoking and therefore needs to be eradicated.

The decision to ban disposable e-cigarettes in France is part of a broader effort to discourage smoking and protect public health. By targeting these particular products, the government aims to break the cycle of addiction among young people and reduce the overall rates of smoking-related illnesses.
