Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened that Turkey could potentially sever ties with the European Union (EU) over its membership bid, in response to a recent report published by the EU that criticized the country's democratic deficiencies, such as censorship laws. Erdogan made these comments before heading to New York to attend the UN General Assembly.

The report in question, adopted by the European Parliament this month, stated that "the accession process cannot resume under the current circumstances," expressing concerns about various issues including censorship, suppression of dissenting voices, lack of judicial independence, and the deterioration of women's rights.

In light of these developments, Erdogan stated that Turkey will assess the situation and consider parting ways with the EU if deemed necessary. The bloc's 2022 report has further strained Turkey-EU relations, prompting calls from the European Parliament to explore alternative frameworks for future EU-Turkey relations.

Turkey's Foreign Ministry has strongly criticized the report, condemning it for containing "unjust accusations and prejudices" and alleging that it reflects the European Parliament's shallow and non-visionary approach towards Turkey and the EU's future.

Turkey's accession negotiations with the EU began in 2005, but progress has been slow and contentious. Despite this, Turkey remains an important economic and defense partner for the EU.

In an effort to revive the stalled talks and mend relations, Turkey's Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek expressed earlier this year that the EU serves as an inspiration for change in the country. He emphasized that the EU is the best alternative for Turkey's desired reforms.

As tensions rise between Turkey and the EU, the future of their relationship remains uncertain. Both parties will need to reassess their positions and evaluate the potential consequences of a potential split.
