Meta Platforms Inc. has made a significant announcement at its annual Connect developers conference, revealing the introduction of new artificial intelligence features to its popular apps, including Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp. These features will provide the company's vast user base of 3 billion people with an enhanced experience similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT. The AI-infused features include customized sticker creation, image editing capabilities, and a range of chatbot characters featuring the faces of celebrities. Meta aims to leverage generative AI to enable users to create personalized stickers, edit images using AI algorithms, and interact with chatbots designed to resemble famous personalities.

This announcement is of crucial importance for Meta as it showcases the company's ability to develop AI-based technology capable of generating text and images based on simple user prompts. Competitors such as Google, Snap Inc., and Microsoft have already entered the AI space, offering various tools to capitalize on the growing interest from the public and investors. Meta has been investing heavily in building its AI infrastructure in recent years, and this event marks a significant step in demonstrating its AI capabilities to a wider audience.

Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has consistently emphasized the company's commitment to advancing AI technology, but this is the first time that generative AI-focused consumer services have taken center stage at Meta's annual event. Previous Connect conferences primarily focused on the metaverse, which has now become the guiding concept for Meta's new corporate identity.

In last year's Connect conference, Meta offered viewers with Oculus headsets the opportunity to watch keynote speeches in a virtual reality space, known as Horizon Worlds. However, this year's event shifted its focus towards highlighting the potential use of Oculus headsets in business settings, virtual meetings, and gaming. AI only played a minor role at last year's event, with mentions limited to the creation of redesigned avatars and the addition of limbs for user avatars.

Among the AI tools showcased at the conference is Meta AI, a text-based chatbot powered by the company's large language model called Llama 2. Meta AI will leverage search information in collaboration with Microsoft's Bing to function as a digital assistant, capable of answering real-time queries and generating images.

Additionally, Meta introduced 28 fantasy character-based chatbots, designed with video reactions using the faces of well-known celebrities. These bots are limited to specific topics and will feature the pre-2023 information available at the time of their creation. Notable figures, such as retired Super Bowl winner Tom Brady and musician Snoop Dogg, have lent their faces and personas to these chatbots.

Meta also unveiled an AI image editor that allows users to modify existing images using text prompts. Users can apply different visual styles or revise the background by simply entering the desired changes. The use of AI will be clearly indicated after any alterations are made.

In conjunction with these announcements, Meta also announced the official release of the Quest 3 headset, the latest iteration of its virtual reality device. The Quest 3 enables users to seamlessly transition between virtual reality and mixed reality experiences.

It is evident that Meta is committed to advancing their AI capabilities and providing users with innovative features across their suite of apps. With these AI-driven enhancements, Meta aims to stay competitive in the AI race while offering users more creative and interactive tools within their social media platforms.
