Lucid Group Inc., the electric vehicle manufacturer based in Newark, California, experienced a significant drop in its production output in the third quarter of this year. The company reported that it built 1,550 electric vehicles (EVs) during this period, marking a 29% decline compared to the previous quarter's figure of 2,173 EVs. This unexpected decrease has raised concerns about Lucid's ability to achieve its ambitious target of producing over 10,000 EVs for the full year.
Although Lucid's deliveries did see a slight increase, with 1,457 vehicles delivered in the third quarter compared to 1,404 in the previous quarter, the decline in production is worrisome. Investors and industry analysts are now questioning whether Lucid can maintain its momentum and fulfill its production goals.
The news of the production decrease had an immediate impact on Lucid's stock price, initially causing a drop of up to 7.2%. However, the stock managed to recover slightly and was trading down 2.8% at $5.13 as of 9:52 a.m. in New York. Nevertheless, the stock has been experiencing a downward trend, showing a decline of approximately 25% throughout this year.
The company has not provided any specific reasons for the lower production volumes. Lucid Motors is expected to release its third-quarter earnings report on November 7th, which may shed some light on the factors contributing to this decline.
Since its foray into production in 2021, Lucid has encountered challenges in attracting buyers for its all-electric Air sedans. Although the vehicles boast impressive features and performance, the starting price of around $87,000, which can easily exceed $100,000 with added options, makes them less accessible to the mainstream market. Lucid faces stiff competition from other established EV manufacturers that offer more affordable options, further impacting its sales and market reach.
The drop in Lucid's production output raises concerns about the company's ability to achieve its production targets this year. Given the challenges it has faced in marketing its high-end EVs, attracting a larger customer base remains a critical issue. Lucid Motors will need to strategize and find avenues to enhance its brand appeal and overcome the price barrier to establish a stronger presence in the competitive EV market.
