In a major development, criminal proceedings against FIFA President Gianni Infantino have been closed by Swiss prosecutors over his dealings with former Swiss attorney general Michael Lauber. This decision comes as a significant victory for Infantino, who has been working towards cleaning up the reputation of world soccer body FIFA, following its involvement in corruption scandals in the past.
Infantino, who assumed office in 2016 with a mandate to bring about reforms, has consistently denied any wrongdoing in his dealings with Lauber. However, in 2020, Swiss authorities initiated proceedings against Infantino, suspecting him of secrecy violations, abuse of office, and aiding and abetting in relation to his meetings with Lauber.
The prosecutors' decision to end the proceedings signifies that their investigations have ultimately "invalidated" these suspicions against Infantino. This outcome has understandably been embraced by Infantino as a triumph for both himself and the revamped vision of FIFA.
Expressing his relief and satisfaction, Infantino stated, "Indeed and with no surprise, the investigation fully and clearly confirms that I have always acted in a lawful and correct way, always defending exclusively the interests of FIFA and football."
The crux of the investigation revolved around the interactions between Infantino and Lauber, who resigned from his position as Swiss attorney general. Lauber's resignation came after a court concluded he had concealed a meeting with Infantino and lied to his superiors during the corruption probe into FIFA.
Following an extensive examination, the prosecutors failed to uncover any evidence indicating that Infantino had manipulated the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland to engage in irregular, inexplicable, erroneous, or even criminal activities. The investigation has effectively cleared Infantino of any potential wrongdoing in his dealings with Lauber.
FIFA, in response to the news, expressed their overwhelming satisfaction with the decision to close the proceedings. This latest turn of events allows for a renewed focus on the ongoing efforts to reform and rebuild the reputation of the global football governing body under Infantino's leadership.
Closing the proceedings without charges not only brings relief for Infantino but also bolsters his position as the head of FIFA. With this obstacle removed, Infantino can now continue his work in bringing about positive change and restoring the integrity of the beautiful game.
