Australia and Papua New Guinea have solidified their close relationship with a major security agreement. The deal, described as "significant and historic" by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, will involve placing Australian police in Papua New Guinea to address internal security needs. The agreement also strengthens Australia's role in the policing, judiciary, and defense sectors of Papua New Guinea. In support of these initiatives, Australia has pledged AUD 200 million ($130 million) and will assist in the establishment of a police training center. While the deal allows Papua New Guinea to engage with other nations, consultations between the two countries regarding security threats are required.

Prime Minister Marape expressed gratitude for Australia's continued support, noting that the country's assistance extended to the establishment of Papua New Guinea's judiciary, public service, and borders prior to its independence. Describing the nations as "brother and sister," Marape emphasized his country's commitment to maintain friendly relations with all nations.

This agreement follows a similar security pact between Papua New Guinea and the United States signed earlier this year, which included upgrades to local military bases. The announcement of a bilateral security pact between China and the Solomon Islands in 2022 further intensified concerns among the US and its allies. Australia, in particular, viewed this development as a potential threat, resulting in increased diplomatic efforts to secure its influence in the Pacific region.

In response to questions about the recent China-Solomon Islands partnership, Marape reassured that Papua New Guinea's relationships with the US and Australia would not come at the expense of its relations with other nations. This statement illustrates the country's commitment to maintaining a balanced and neutral foreign policy.

The security agreement between Australia and Papua New Guinea strengthens the bond between the two nations, solidifies Australia's role in supporting Papua New Guinea's security needs, and enhances regional stability. As both countries continue to navigate their geopolitical landscape, this agreement ensures greater cooperation and consultation on security matters while respecting Papua New Guinea's sovereignty and non-alignment policies.
