Rafael Nadal, the 22-time grand slam champion, has expressed uncertainty about his chances of defending his title at the upcoming French Open, as his recovery from a hip injury is taking longer than expected. In a video posted on social media, Nadal revealed that he has had to pull out of several tournaments, including Monte Carlo, Barcelona, and Madrid, as his recovery enters its 14th week.
Nadal sustained the injury during his second-round defeat to Mackenzie McDonald at the Australian Open earlier this year. Initially, he had hoped to be fit again within six to eight weeks, but as his recovery process has been slower than anticipated, he has had to change his treatment plan. The 36-year-old admitted that the past few weeks and months have been difficult for him.
Despite being the greatest clay court player of all time, Nadal's chances of competing at Monte Carlo, Barcelona, and Madrid, where he has enjoyed unparalleled success and holds the record for most titles won at all three events, are now in doubt. However, Nadal remains determined to have the right attitude and mentality towards his recovery process and hopes to compete in one of the remaining tournaments of the clay season.
The French Open, where Nadal has won the title an unprecedented 14 times, begins on May 28. Though he cannot give any specific deadlines for his recovery, he is hopeful that he will be able to compete in one of the most important tournaments of his career. Nadal's fans, meanwhile, will be eagerly waiting to see if the tennis legend can recover in time to defend his crown.
