Airbus is on the verge of finalizing a deal to establish a helicopter assembly line in India, according to sources familiar with the matter. The agreement is expected to be signed during French President Emmanuel Macron's state visit to India. The production of H125 civil helicopters will be overseen by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), an Indian defense and aerospace company. Airbus has declined to comment on the potential deal, but the announcement could come after Macron attends Republic Day celebrations with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The growing ties between France and India have been further bolstered by a 25-year plan aimed at enhancing cooperation in defense, nuclear energy, and space. Last year, Modi was invited to France's Bastille Day celebrations, where he unveiled plans to acquire additional submarines from France's Naval Group and 26 marine Rafale fighter jets from Dassault Aviation SA.
Airbus and Tata already have several agreements in place. TASL recently announced an agreement to manufacture and supply components for Airbus commercial jets, including the A320 and A350 models. Moreover, TASL will assemble the Airbus C295 military transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force.
French President Macron's visit to India includes a delegation of top executives, including Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury, Safran SA CEO Olivier Andries, and the heads of electricity utility EDF SA and Dassault Aviation SA.
The establishment of the helicopter assembly line in India signifies Airbus's commitment to expanding its presence in the country's growing aerospace sector. It also highlights the increasing importance of India as a strategic partner for France in the defense and aviation industries. This move not only strengthens economic ties between the two countries but could also lead to further collaboration in future projects. The agreement is anticipated to bring significant technological advancements and opportunities for job creation in India's aviation industry.
The potential deal with TASL could also provide Airbus with a competitive edge in India's civil helicopter market, which is witnessing a surge in demand due to various applications such as VIP transport, tourism, and emergency services. With local production, Airbus can cater to this growing market while also benefiting from cost savings and reduced delivery times.
The signing of this accord would mark another milestone in the long-standing partnership between Airbus and Tata. The two companies have already established a strong working relationship, with Tata manufacturing aircraft components for Airbus commercial jets. The collaboration has not only contributed to the Indian aerospace industry but has also helped Airbus strengthen its global supply chain.
Overall, the imminent agreement for the establishment of an Airbus helicopter assembly line in India exemplifies the strengthening ties between the two countries in the defense and aviation sectors. It serves as a testament to the growing importance of India as an aerospace hub and highlights Airbus's commitment to long-term collaboration and investment in the country's thriving aviation industry.
