Official data released on Thursday revealed a 3.1% decrease in economic activity in December compared to the previous month. This drop, reminiscent of April 2020, highlighted the depth of the economic challenges facing the country. Year-on-year, economic activity fell by 4.5%, surpassing the 3.2% decline predicted by economists surveyed by Bloomberg.

The contraction was primarily driven by declines in key sectors such as finance, manufacturing, and commerce. President Milei's shock austerity measures, which included drastic devaluation of the official exchange rate, freezing of public works, and cutting public sector jobs, aimed to address the significant deficit contributing to annual inflation rates exceeding 250%.

The consequences of Milei's policies were felt swiftly, with a surge in poverty levels recorded in January. A study by the Universidad Católica Argentina revealed that 57% of the population fell below the poverty line, a stark increase from about 45% the previous year. In response to the low wages and challenging economic conditions, worker unions announced various demonstrations and strikes, including a 24-hour health worker strike.

Economy Minister Luis Caputo acknowledged the difficulty of the situation in a recent television interview, emphasizing the necessity of the measures taken. Despite the government's efforts to alleviate the economic crisis, retail sales plunged by 28.5% in January compared to the previous year, with significant declines in the consumption of essential goods like food, drinks, and pharmaceuticals, as reported by the Argentina Confederation of Medium Companies (CAME).

Looking ahead, economists surveyed by the central bank forecast a 3.0% contraction in gross domestic product for the year. The challenges facing Argentina's economy underscore the delicate balance between implementing necessary reforms and mitigating the impact on the population, a task that remains daunting amid the current economic turmoil.
