FIFA is set to introduce an innovative new concept in the world of international football with the launch of the FIFA Series, a series of friendly matches to be held in one location during the international window. This pilot project aims to provide national teams with the opportunity to play against teams from different confederations, allowing them to gain valuable experience and exposure on the global stage. While there are no trophies or prize money involved, FIFA will cover travel costs to ensure that the participating teams can focus on the matches and the development of their players.

The inaugural FIFA Series will take place from March 18-26 in four countries - Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Azerbaijan, and Sri Lanka. Each location will host four teams, who will play two matches each during the series. The concept is especially beneficial for national teams that have limited opportunities to compete against teams from outside their own confederation, offering them a chance to face different styles of play and enhance their competitive experience.

According to Elkhan Mammadov, FIFA's Regional Member Associations Director for Europe, the FIFA Series aims to bridge the gap for teams that have never qualified for the World Cup. With the expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams in 2026, there will be more member associations with limited international experience, and the FIFA Series provides them with a platform to gain exposure and prepare for competing on a larger stage.

The FIFA Series is not just about the matches on the field, but also about opening up new opportunities for member associations to showcase their football talent. While the focus for the pilot edition is on providing a unique experience for the participating teams, there are plans to expand the series in the future, with discussions already underway to involve high-ranked teams in future editions. Additionally, FIFA is exploring broadcast agreements to ensure that the matches reach a global audience, with potential streaming options on the FIFA+ platform.

In terms of sponsorship, FIFA is inviting member associations to bring on their own sponsors for the Series. However, the door is also open for companies to approach FIFA directly for sponsorship opportunities. With the FIFA Series set to kick off next month, football fans can look forward to an exciting new format that promises to provide valuable international exposure for national teams and pave the way for more diverse and competitive matchups in the future.
