Wizz Air Holdings Plc. is gearing up for a potential increase in capacity this summer despite facing challenges with some of its aircraft being grounded due to engine issues. The Budapest-based discount carrier is strategizing to overcome these obstacles by utilizing short-term aircraft leases and introducing new plane deliveries to safeguard its network.

With estimates suggesting a "couple of percentage point increase" in capacity, Wizz Air CEO Jozsef Varadi remains optimistic about navigating through the limitations stemming from the Pratt & Whitney turbines issue. Varadi shared in an interview with Bloomberg that the carrier foresees about 18 months to address and rectify these capacity constraints. In line with this strategy, Wizz Air plans to focus on reducing frequencies rather than eliminating routes to maintain operational efficiency.

Despite the competitive landscape and pressure from larger rival Ryanair Holdings Plc, which is eyeing expansion in Wizz Air's core markets in central and eastern Europe, Varadi remains unfazed. He dismissed the notion of a long-term threat from Ryanair, emphasizing that the engine issues were temporary setbacks. Varadi further highlighted that Wizz Air is poised to bounce back and ramp up capacity once it receives overhauled engines in 2025.

In light of Ryanair's warnings regarding potential price increases due to tight capacity, Wizz Air is taking a different approach. Varadi emphasized that the airline does not intend to follow suit by hiking prices, as it believes that maintaining affordable fares is crucial for sustaining demand. By staying committed to its growth strategy and prioritizing accessibility for passengers, Wizz Air aims to differentiate itself in the competitive airline industry.

As Wizz Air navigates through the challenges posed by engine issues and intensifying competition, the airline's focus on operational resilience, strategic planning, and customer-centric approach will be critical in driving its success and growth in the dynamic European aviation market.
