Kenya’s tourism sector experienced a significant resurgence in 2023, with earnings soaring by 32% to reach 352.5 billion shillings ($2.7 billion) – the highest since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. This surge in revenue was attributed to a notable increase in tourist arrivals, which rose by 32% to 1.95 million visitors. The country’s Tourism Research Institute forecasts an even more promising outlook for 2024, with anticipated arrivals set to reach 2.38 million.

Among the top five source markets for tourists visiting Kenya in 2023 were the US, Uganda, Tanzania, UK, and India. The primary reason cited for travel to the country was leisure, with 45% of visitors coming for holiday purposes, followed by 24% visiting family and relatives, and another 24% attending meetings and conferences. Despite the uptick in visitor numbers, the average spending per tourist decreased, partly due to the depreciation of the Kenyan shilling against major currencies throughout the year.

While the sector’s performance in 2023 exceeded expectations, it fell slightly short of the government’s targets of 425.4 billion shillings in earnings and 2.35 million arrivals. Despite this, tourism remains a crucial pillar of Kenya’s economy, ranking as the third-largest source of foreign exchange earnings after remittances and agricultural exports. Beyond traditional attractions like safaris and pristine beaches, Kenya is actively seeking to promote its diverse cuisine and sporting activities to further enhance its appeal as a tourist destination.

Looking ahead, the Tourism Research Institute is optimistic about Kenya’s tourism prospects, projecting that the country is on track to achieve the government’s ambitious goal of attracting 5 million tourists by 2028. As the sector continues to evolve and diversify its offerings, Kenya remains a compelling destination for travelers seeking a unique and enriching experience amidst the nation's rich cultural tapestry and natural beauty.
