Automobili Pininfarina, known for creating exclusive €2.2 million electric hypercars, is venturing into new territory with the development of what is anticipated to be the world’s most costly sport utility vehicle. Set to be unveiled within the next year, the upcoming four-seater crossover is priced between €400,000 and €1 million, surpassing Ferrari NV’s Purosangue, which starts at roughly €380,000.
CEO Paolo Dellachà revealed in an interview that the company aims to step into a segment with potentially higher production numbers, positioning the new model as bridging the gap between sports cars and practicality. At last year's Monterey Car Week, Automobili Pininfarina offered a glimpse of the SUV through the electric PURA Vision concept. The concept showcased bold body panels over the rear wheels, a sleek glass roof, and innovative pillarless doors that open in reverse for enhanced accessibility.
Under the ownership of India’s Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., Automobili Pininfarina made an impressive entrance five years ago with the release of the electric Battista. Limited to 150 units and featuring 1,900 horsepower and a top speed of 250 miles per hour, the Battista remains as the most powerful Italian supercar ever produced. The company has since unveiled special editions like the €3.4 million Battista Gotham, inspired by the fictional character Bruce Wayne.
Automobili Pininfarina is the sister company to Mahindra’s Pininfarina SpA, a renowned coach-builder established in 1930 with a legacy of designing iconic Ferraris. Leveraging Pininfarina's design heritage, the brand set out six years ago to create its line of luxury vehicles. Dellachà discusses the future of the Battista, confirming that all derivatives will be limited to 150 units and hinting at further enhancements to the model's features and performance.
As Automobili Pininfarina expands its portfolio beyond electric sports cars, the possibility of hybrids is under consideration. While electric technology currently delivers top-tier performance, exploring hybrid options to maximize efficiency and appeal to a broader market is on the horizon. Despite a subdued demand for EVs in the mass market, the luxury niche targeted by Automobili Pininfarina remains resilient to such trends, focusing on providing exclusive, personalized experiences to discerning clients.
In a realm where personalization reigns supreme, clients have the opportunity to tailor their vehicles to reflect their individuality. From experiencing the sheer power of 1,900 horsepower to collaborating with designers to envision their personalized Battista, clients are immersed in a bespoke journey that captures their unique tastes and preferences. With a commitment to luxury and exclusivity, Automobili Pininfarina continues to redefine the boundaries of automotive craftsmanship, leaving a lasting mark on the industry.
