Greek firefighters are currently facing a daunting battle against two wildfires near Athens, as strong winds add complexity to containment efforts. Just recently, they successfully managed to extinguish blazes in a mountainous region close to the capital and on an Aegean Sea island. The ongoing firefighting operation near the town of Keratea, located approximately 35 kilometers south of Athens, sees scores of firefighters clad in full gear, supported by 23 water-carrying aircraft, relentlessly combating the inferno. Evacuations were swiftly ordered as the flames, fueled by pine and olive trees, advanced towards residential properties.

Simultaneously, a separate wildfire in the north of Athens, specifically in the community of Stamata, has engulfed a dense pine forest, shrouding parts of the city in smoke. Fortunately, as of now, there have been no reports of immediate threats to homes in the area. With prevailing hot and windy weather conditions prevailing throughout Greece, numerous wildfires have erupted over the weekend, prompting authorities to caution the public to steer clear of forested areas for safety reasons.

Meanwhile, on the island of Serifos, firefighters continue to grapple with a blaze that ignited amidst low vegetation on Saturday, rapidly spreading due to the forceful winds. The fire, which spanned a vast expanse of 15 kilometers at its peak, inflicted damage on vacation homes and storage facilities, necessitating the evacuation of several rural settlements. Mayor Kostas Revinthis of Serifos conveyed the extent of the destruction caused by the wildfire through a televised interview.

Though challenges persist, an encouraging development was noted in the mountainous forests of Parnitha just outside Athens, where a wildfire that threatened a nature reserve had significantly subsided by Sunday morning, as per official reports. In recent years, Greece has experienced increasingly devastating wildfires, attributed to rising temperatures, aridity, and wind patterns believed by scientists to be linked to the impacts of climate change. In response to the urgency posed by last year's fatal forest fires and the country's record-warm winter, Greece has refined its firefighting strategy, incorporating proactive measures such as deploying additional fire engines to every new blaze, enhancing aerial support speed, and prioritizing forest clearance as part of a new operational doctrine.
