In a remarkable and unprecedented event, the largest mass stranding of dolphins in United States history occurred off the coast of Cape Cod last month. Confirming previous estimates, a final review of data and aerial imagery by the International Fund for Animal Welfare revealed that a staggering 146 dolphins were involved in the incident near Wellfleet, Massachusetts, which began on June 28.

Located on Cape Cod’s northeastern arm, the dolphins were found stranded in the shallow mud flats of Wellfleet, specifically in an area known as the “Gut” at Great Island at the Herring River. While the rescue efforts managed to save 102 of the dolphins, marking a remarkable 70% survival rate, sadly seven dolphins had to be euthanized and 37 died naturally during the stranding.

The rescuers faced numerous challenges due to the sheer number of dolphins, their size, the vast area they were spread across, the difficult mud conditions, and the complexity of reaching them. Despite these obstacles, by July 8, over 100 dolphins had been successfully returned to deeper waters, with satellite tracking tags showing them swimming safely offshore.

A heartening development came as reports from whale watch vessels revealed that some of the rescued dolphins, identified by temporary markings, were now seen swimming alongside hundreds of their fellow dolphins, far from the stranding site. This image brought joy to the rescuers, highlighting the successful outcome of their efforts.

Notably, while previous incidents in Hawaii and the Florida Keys have shown dolphin species circling in shallow waters, the scale of this recent stranding on Cape Cod sets a new record for the highest number of dolphins beached in a single event. Cape Cod, with its 12-mile stretch of shoreline, has unfortunately become a hotspot for dolphin strandings, far outnumbering any other location worldwide. Despite the challenges faced, the dedicated rescuers continue their vital work to ensure the safety and well-being of these majestic marine creatures.
