Amidst ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, the Philippines is actively asserting its territorial claims by moving forward with the development of an airport on Pag-asa Island, also known as Thitu Island in the Spratly Islands. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s administration has initiated the procurement of land for the runway extension as part of the Pag-asa Island Airport Development Project. This project aims to enhance transportation access for Filipino civilians and military personnel residing on the remote island.
The planned airport signifies the Philippines' determination to maintain its presence in the contested waters, particularly in the face of China's expansive territorial assertions. Despite a 2016 arbitral ruling dismissing China's claims, Beijing continues to contest Philippine sovereignty in the region. In response, Manila has been actively deploying vessels in the South China Sea, leading to periodic confrontations with Chinese forces.
Further bolstering its strategic positioning, another military runway project on Balabac Island in Palawan province is nearing completion. This development holds significance as Balabac is designated as one of the four new sites where the US military can access under an expanded defense agreement forged recently. President Marcos emphasized the crucial role of Palawan in national security, underscoring the importance of completing such infrastructure projects.
Under the leadership of President Marcos, these initiatives are part of a broader strategy to stimulate economic growth in the region south of the capital. By improving transportation connectivity and strengthening tourism infrastructure, the government aims to attract new investments and bolster the local economy. These projects underscore the Philippines' commitment to upholding its territorial integrity, safeguarding national security, and promoting development in the South China Sea region.
