Venice officials are celebrating the outcome of a temporary entrance fee trial that aimed to regulate the influx of visitors to the city. The 29-day experiment, which required a €5 reservation fee, surpassed expectations by generating €2,425,310 in revenue. A total of 3,618,114 individuals made reservations during the trial period, with exemptions granted to various groups such as hotel guests, workers, students, and residents.

Analysis of the data revealed that Saturdays were the most popular days for day-trippers and tourists, while overall attendance on 'red flag days' decreased gradually over the course of the experiment. Local residents in Venice reported a noticeable decrease in crowds compared to previous years, attributing this to the success of the entrance fee trial.

Mayor Luigi Brugnaro expressed satisfaction with the results at a recent press conference, indicating that a more detailed analysis of the data will be conducted in the coming months. While the entrance fee has officially ended, city officials are considering reinstating it during peak tourist seasons. Councillor Simone Venturini praised the experiment for providing valuable insights into managing visitor numbers effectively.

Notably, amidst the positive outcomes of the entrance fee trial, the mayor and his aides are facing allegations of corruption relating to a large commercial property development project. Despite denial of these allegations by the mayor, calls for his resignation have emerged in the city. As Venice continues to navigate its tourism challenges, the success of the entrance fee experiment marks a significant step towards sustainable tourism management.
