In a significant move to deepen cooperation and strengthen ties in Central Asia, Germany and Uzbekistan recently inked a series of agreements covering various key areas, including migration, critical raw materials, and climate action. The signing ceremony, held in the historic city of Samarkand, saw the presence of Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who also plans to visit Kazakhstan as part of his official visit to the region.

The migration agreement between Germany and Uzbekistan is poised to facilitate the entry of skilled workers into Germany, a development aimed at addressing the persistent labor shortages in sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, and small trades. Simultaneously, the agreement outlines provisions for the efficient repatriation of migrants without the right to stay in either country, underscoring a bilateral commitment to manage migration flows effectively.

Furthermore, the joint declaration of intent on critical raw materials, particularly copper, is expected to bolster supply chain resilience and promote sustainable sourcing practices. The agreements on veterinary medicine, livestock farming, water resource management, and transport cooperation are geared towards enhancing collaboration in crucial sectors for both nations.

Notably, the visit also serves as a platform for Germany to diversify its energy supplies and source of raw materials away from countries like Russia and China. In this context, Scholz's discussions in Kazakhstan are expected to focus on expanding crude oil deliveries to Germany's Schwedt refinery, diversifying the refinery's oil sources and ensuring energy security.

Looking ahead, the upcoming talks in Kazakhstan hold promise for enhanced economic and diplomatic partnerships, with agreements planned on banking cooperation, the establishment of educational institutions, and infrastructure development. The collective engagement with Central Asian leaders underscores Germany's commitment to fostering mutually beneficial relationships and leveraging regional cooperation for shared prosperity and stability.
