In an unexpected turn of events, a rare snow and ice storm has led to the closure of South Africa’s vital N3 highway at Van Reenen’s Pass. The pass, serving as a crucial link between the populous provinces of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, has been rendered impassable due to blizzard conditions, including treacherous black ice and severely limited visibility.
This unforeseen weather phenomenon has triggered a swift response from disaster management teams as they work tirelessly to clear the thick layers of snow and offer assistance to stranded motorists. Simultaneously, humanitarian organizations have mobilized to provide essential emergency aid to those affected by the highway shutdown.
Vusi Mona, the National Road Agency's general manager, has urged road users to steer clear of the affected areas, citing the likelihood of further adverse weather conditions in the near future. The uncharacteristic snowfall and freezing temperatures, occurring just days ahead of the southern hemisphere's spring equinox, have blanketed regions in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Free State with wintry conditions.
The South African Weather Service has issued cautionary alerts, warning residents of prolonged cold spells on the horizon. Situated within the majestic Drakensberg mountains, Van Reenen’s Pass stands at an elevation of nearly 1,700 meters (5,577 feet), making it particularly vulnerable to snowstorms and icy conditions during such weather events.
